Current Obsession: Tata Harper Revitalizing Body Oil
OMG. I can't even describe how much I love this body oil! I received a sample of this product one day when I was buying lunch at Organic Avenue (a raw food cafe that serves organic, fresh pressed juices, raw snacks, and natural beauty, health & home products). I hadn't had time to pack my lunch for work one day, and my buying-lunch options are limited uptown if I don't want to pay a fortune, so I figured, if I was going to have to pay $10 for a salad I might as well buy one I know is worth it. And trust me, everything at Organic Avenue is worth it!
Anyway, while I was deciding what to eat I perused the beauty products. I prefer to only use natural products on my skin. (You know, your skin is the largest organ in your body, when you use products containing toxic chemicals on your skin it is absorbed into your bloodstream. Gross. Check your ingredients labels! That means make up, too!) One of the girls working there started talking to me and recommended the Tata Harper line. I had heard of this line once before in a magazine but I never tried it. She gave me some samples of the Revitalizing Body Oil, the Hydrating Floral Essence, and the Refreshing Cleanser. My skin never felt better! But what really hooked me was the smell. Each product has its own scent that comes from the flowers and herbs Tata uses to create each formula. She doesn't add any product for scent alone.
Whole Living magazine (November 2011) recently wrote an article about Tata Harper where she talks about why she started her line and what was her motivation for creating a 100% natural, non-toxic skincare line. Her stepfather was diagnosed with kidney and bladder cancer eight years ago, and upon arriving to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, she and her family were asked to bring in all of his personal care items. "I was surprised that they were even of interest," she said. "The doctor explained that the ingredients in the creams and other things you put on your skin every day--sometimes twice a day--can be absorbed into your bloodstream. Along with prescribing a healthier diet of organic fruits and veggies, he wanted to make sure that any grooming product my stepfather used from then on would be nontoxic."
After searching for a natural line of beauty products for herself, and being completely disappointed with her options, she decided to start her own line. She began researching which natural ingredients were best for specific results, i.e. blemishes, dark circles, anti-aging. She began working with scientists and skin biologists to create the best, 100% natural line, which had clinical support to show the actual results of using the products.
Now, I have to tell you my secret, I don't use this amazing body oil on my body. I use it on my face! I've been doing this for years and it has saved me a lot of money. I think that good beauty products are worth the investment, but you'll find that a lot of companies make similar products for face and body, and the ingredients list will be exactly the same. But you will pay $100 for a 1.7 oz bottle of face cream, or you can pay a lot less than $100 for a body cream that is more than double the size of the face cream. I have found this to be the case with many beauty companies. So next time you're looking for your favorite face care products, check the line to see if they have body care with the same purpose and ingredients.
Up until I finally decided to pull the trigger and buy my Tata Harper body oil, I was using sweet almond oil as my moisturizer (its great for reducing the appearance of under-eye circles). You can find so many natural products to use on your skin without spending a fortune. A 3.4 ounce bottle of sweet almond oil at Whole Foods will cost you about $10, and last anywhere from 3-6 months, depending on how frequently you use it. I am always researching at-home beauty concoctions I can make, I will share some of my favorite recipes in another post!
